Claude now adds invisible watermarks to text from supported models

Anthropic says supported Claude models now mark generated text and some files, but the signal is not conclusive and older-model support is still in progress.

How does Claude mark AI-generated content?

Anthropic says supported Claude models now use machine-readable statistical watermarks in generated text and attach signed provenance metadata to some generated files. The change reaches Claude, Claude Code, Cowork, Tag and the API when a supported model and marking type are available. It is a provenance signal, not proof that Claude authored every word, and it may disappear after heavy editing or file conversion.

What Anthropic changed

Anthropic's support page says Claude models launched on or after August 2, 2026 support marking from launch. For supported models, Anthropic says generated text carries a statistical watermark created through word-selection patterns; the company says it does not add hidden characters. Supported generated image files such as SVG, PNG and JPG can also carry signed provenance metadata based on the C2PA standard. Anthropic says it is still adding marking support to models released before August 2.

Where the marks appear

Anthropic says marking happens at the model level, so supported output can carry marks across Claude, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, Claude Tag and Claude Platform/API. The company also lists AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry for embedded text marks when a supported model is used. Some platforms, features and file types may not support every marking method.

What happens when you copy or edit text

Anthropic says the text watermark travels when you copy and paste the response and may survive some editing. That wording matters: it does not promise that the mark survives heavy rewriting. Anthropic lists paraphrasing, translation, mixing text with other writing and very short passages among the reasons a mark may not be detected.

How the text watermark works

Anthropic says Claude's text watermark is a version of Google DeepMind's SynthID-Text approach. When several next words would all fit, the model uses a key-dependent source of randomness to choose among them. Across a long enough passage, those choices can form a statistical pattern that a detector with the key can recognize. Anthropic says this adds no hidden characters or extra tokens, has negligible speed impact and does not make generations more expensive. Those are Anthropic's technical claims; The AI Guy has not independently measured them. The mechanism has less room to operate when wording must be exact. Anthropic says short or factual passages, proofreading and code can contain too few interchangeable choices for a detectable signal, although comments or arbitrary wording may still carry one. Anthropic says a detection API is coming, but it has not supplied a public launch date, price or access terms.

What a detected mark actually means

A detected mark is a signal that content may have been processed by Claude. Anthropic explicitly says it is not conclusive proof of full provenance. A Claude-marked passage could include user-written text, quoted material or content from another source, while an unmarked passage could still come from Claude if the model was unsupported or the mark was altered or removed.

What creators and developers should check

If your workflow exports Claude text or image files, record the model and product surface you used and avoid treating watermark detection as a complete authorship test. Developers should wait for Anthropic's promised detection API details before building automated decisions around the signal. The AI Guy has not independently tested how well the marks survive real editing workflows.

The bottom line

Anthropic is adding machine-readable marking to supported Claude output. Models launched on or after August 2, 2026 support marking at launch, older-model coverage is still in progress, and detection provides only a provenance clue. Do not use the presence or absence of one mark as a standalone verdict about authorship.

FAQ

Does every Claude response have a watermark now?

No. Anthropic says models launched on or after August 2 support marking at launch and that older-model support is still in progress. Platform, feature and file-type support can also vary.

Can editing remove Claude's text watermark?

Anthropic says the mark may persist through some editing, but heavy editing, paraphrasing, translation or mixing text can make it undetectable.

Does a Claude watermark prove Claude wrote the content?

No. Anthropic says detection means the content may have been processed by Claude; it does not establish full authorship or provenance.

Does Claude's text watermark use hidden characters?

Anthropic says no. It describes a statistical pattern created through word-selection choices and says detection requires its key.
